Self-Assessments

2011 yearlong

6/3/11

In the very beginning of the year I was not sure at all what I wanted to do, so I looked around the room and decided that I felt like making something whereupon I thought babies would be interesting to make out of various materials. This was challenging and took a long time and made even more difficult by my broken right wrist. Ultimately I learned how to work with my hands and the importance of such appendages. Next I moved to photographing the babies which gave me literally and figuratively a new perspective with looking at my art. The project also taught me a lot about photoshop and how great it can help out your photos. I then began to focus on my strengths as an artist by creating creatures and drawing them with ink both very small and large. The skills I had learned early on through trying new art ultimately helped the strengths I already had making my pieces even more successful. Throughout the year there have been arduous tasks mixed with relaxing stretches of my imagination which I feel has elicited a quick but gentle growth for me as an artist, and I have enjoyed every minute of it.

Winter/Spring 2011 marking period 3

3/25/11

I began this marking period by making works that were similar to my small scale scan-able drawings. This time however, they were larger and I added a specific color I would associate with each of the three colors and the name of the color would be the name of the creature as well. I then moved on to a larger scale similar to the last with the creature’s face taking up the whole size of the paper and adding slight color to the piece.

For the most part, this work concentrated on using my imagination in creating a creature and also creativity in finding interesting ways in presenting the creatures. Otherwise, these pieces helped fine tune my skills with ink drawings as well as help broaden my skills. in the later pieces I began to focus on the eyes of my creature to find ways of adding designs and patterns into the work and I found this to be very successful.

I think I deserve a grade somewhere around an A because I was consistently on task and even managed to get almost every blog post done on time. I also learned a lot from the work I did and improve the skills I already had as an artist.

Winter 2010/2011, marking period 2

1/13/11

This marking period began with the revisiting of my baby sculptures through photography. The photographs were basically abstract and I felt that they came out very strong. I then moved on to working on some of my stronger points in drawing characters on small flat objects that I then scanned. The last project I worked on was similar to the last one, however, it was more themed by choosing the name of colors to work with as a name of the character as well as incorporating the color into the work.

With the first project of the marking period I learned a great deal about photoshop and methods of editing pictures. I learned tis mostly through online tutorials but played around with it to a point of comfortability. The actual photographs that turned out well gave me the chance to reflect upon the work and figure out what is strong in the piece so that I can incorporate this in other pieces. This was particularly helpful because I really like using negative space and the stronger photographs helped determine what uses of negative space worked well. The latter projects helped reinforce my strengths but more specifically taught me of the importance in using high detail as well as facial expressions to enhance how successful a piece can be.

Overall, this marking period has taught me many skills as an artist but has also reinforced my strong points. I have certainly taken the time and effort in creating each piece. I managed to bulk up my portfolio and learn of what to improve upon or use more in my work and therefore I would say I should be somewhere in the range of an A.

Fall 2010, marking period 1

10/29/10

The year began with me making babies, an injury which prevented me from making any more, thereby moving onto abstract pieces from sentences using my synesthesia and finally drawing creatures. The babies were interesting to create and provided some challenges along the way, ultimately teaching me the importance of technique, focus, and utilizing my attention to detail. Often, I have found that when I stay alerted to my technique and process of creation, I make my best work. This goes hand in hand with my focus; remembering to pay attention to what I am doing at all times, in order to gain the best results. This focus accompanies my attention to detail wherein I need this focus to stay vigilant with what I am doing, and how I am doing it.

I have employed what I had learned into my work since, most successfully with a specific sketchbook assignment. I am discovering that I take pleasure in this style of thick line drawings very much and enjoy even more letting my imagination flow into creating deformed figures or creatures. I plan to hone this area of my artwork but also branch out into one of the many facets of my artistic interests, keeping watch over the skills I have learned early in the school year.

I have worked hard my pieces, learned a great deal in a short time, and didn’t let an injury give me an excuse to make less challenging work. Despite this, I feel that I have been lacking in keeping up to date with website posts. I am a huge procrastinator which goes unchecked because it never truly causes problems other than some discomfort or a slightly sullen attitude while working on the overdue issues. I think that it would be in my best interest to correct my procrastination, and will try to get better with the problem. I see this as my only pitfall this far in the year, but it is simple, and correctable. With all being said, I expect to receive about an A-on the marking period.
