Artist Statement

I enjoy creating art because to me, I use art as a way to have fun. I don’t as much try to make my art appealing as much as have an interesting and fun time creating it. I hope that what fun is to me communicates something interesting or pleasant to look at while not compromising myself. If I have ever made such a piece that makes me happy, gave me joy in it’s creation, and in some ways captivated another person, then I feel as though I’ve done what I’m supposed to.

I’ve always been interested in art but felt somewhat frustrated when I was younger that my drawings and paintings seemed lacking.  When I began to get a little older, I didn’t create as much but I still loved art and wished that I could become as good as any of the great artists I saw. I was influenced most by surrealist painters and loved how much you could look at throughout the painting. I was fortunate enough to see many galleries as a kid, which only continued my exposure to the art that would inspire me to create my own work.

Experimenting with surrealism and abstract work, I eventually found out how to have fun with my work. I created figures spontaneously helping me to practice with certain areas I wanted to focus on. I very much enjoyed sketching because it was fast and I could create numerous drawings that contributed to later work with anything I saw as a success. I also branched out to try and use new mediums because it kept me going and exploring.

I feel that my art is constantly growing and expanding as I pick up skills and experiment. This experimentation is what makes my art fun and allows me to create without a block or without being bored. For me, the meaning in my art correlates to how much fun I had creating it and whether or not I find it appealing. If someone else enjoys the piece as much as I do then I feel like I have succeeded.
